It happens to the best of us — Pentagon hacked – lesson inside!

If it can happen to the Pentagon, it can happen to you as well. Therefore, be safe out there..

From CNN:

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Thousands of confidential files on the U.S. military’s most technologically advanced fighter aircraft have been compromised by unknown computer hackers over the past two years, according to senior defense officials.

The Internet intruders were able to gain access to data related to the design and electronics systems of the Joint Strike Fighter through computers of Pentagon contractors in charge of designing and building the aircraft, according to the officials, who did not want to be identified because of the sensitivity of the issue. […]

This is interesting (emphasis by me):

The plane uses stealth and other highly sensitive electronic equipment, but it does not appear that information on those systems was compromised, because it is stored on computers that are not connected to the Internet, according to the defense officials.

WHAT A CRAZY IDEA: having machines that carry sensitive information not connected to the Internet!

I am actually kidding.. this is a good real life lesson for you out there. If you have a machine that deals with sensitive data (such as backups or customer information or your own private information), the safest thing to do is to not have it connected to a network that can be hacked. I know it sounds like blasphemy in times like these where your coffee machine is pulling weather information from the Internet (ok, exaggerated, but you know what I mean), but some good ol’ ‘no connection to the Internet’ works wonders.

Well, I am glad they did that. Otherwise the Chinese would be busy building the first clone fighters already — they probably are, and they are probably better, but that’s another story. 🙂
